Balancing The Waters

For over 1,000 years, Bali has enjoyed a unique harmony between its human inhabitants and mother nature — largely based on the balance of water.

Water resources, once sustainably managed by tradition, are now dwindling as population growth, climate change and tourism expansion place pressure on the island’s water sources. Balancing the Waters is a documentary that focuses on Bali’s water issues and the challenges surrounding water conservation in our modern world.

The story begins at Waterbom, a world-renowned water park on the island of Bali that recognizes how a business like ours can potentially have a devastating effect on the Balinese balance of water. After considering different solutions, we delve into the ancient Subak irrigation system. Developed in the 9th century, the Subak water distribution system is used to this day, carving out and supporting Bali’s iconic rice field landscapes.

Led by Waterbom CEO Sayan Gulino, this documentary was created as a passion project aimed at highlighting Bali's water crisis. It explores various solutions to the island's water issues, showcasing how local initiatives are creating a positive impact.
