August 2023 - At Waterbom, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Since 2017, our program, Karmic Returns, has been key to driving sustainability practices and policies. From comprehensive waste management, to water and energy conservation, all initiatives are carried out to reduce our ecological footprint, furthering our goals of becoming the world’s most sustainable waterpark. We aim to set an example to other businesses of how adopting sustainable practices to reduce the burden on natural resources can drive quantifiable returns.

We are honoured that our dedicated efforts have resulted in our recognition as the the Grand Title Winner in Sustainability and Social Responsibility at the 2023 Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Gold Awards.

Our main sustainability pillars include:

  • Water conservation
In addition to measuring our water usage, all of our water flows through our closed loop filtration system, meaning it is circulated from the slides through the Lazy River, cleaned, filtered and reused rather than wasted. We have also installed 15 recharge wells throughout the park, to collect rainwater and thousands of biopore to help replenish our groundwater usage back to the underground aquifer

  • Energy conservation
Our solar panels can supply power of 156 kWp with actual power production up to 800 kWh/day, enough to cover 8% of our power requirement.

  • Waste management
All of our park waste materials are processed in our onsite sorting and composting facility, with 100% of our organic materials being turned into compost for our gardens and an average of 5% of our waste being sent to landfill, with all other materials recycled

The newly opened Oasis Gardens area has successfully integrated an Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) Plan. This approach meticulously factors in the sourcing of materials, construction methods, and design elements, ensuring an ethical and sustainable expansion project.

In the first quarter of 2023, we take pride in our significant achievement of managing a 97% recycling rate and successfully reducing landfill waste to only 3.4%.

These accomplishments highlight the commitment of our team, and the strong integration of our sustainability practices within both our park's operations and our company culture. As we move forward, we are dedicated to fostering a greener and more responsible environment for all.
